Combating The Locusts Invasion

County Governments of Meru, Isiolo, Laikipia, Samburu, Wajir and other counties in the region hit by Desert Locusts Invasion were congratulated for the rapid, synchronized and structured response to the plague of locusts.

The locusts invasion had triggered panic and fear among locals.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Hon. Peter Munya had a media briefing on the progress of the fight against the locusts. He said that working closely with officials from his Ministry, the County teams have contributed greatly towards controlling the insects.

These locusts invaded the counties, and could have done enormous damage. He also appreciated other players and people in the corporate sector who provided aircraft and other support forms.

CS Munya said so far the locusts have largely been contained.

6,000 liters of new and more effective chemicals were delivered yesterday and are being used to spray locust swarms in various areas including Marsabit and Wajir.

This is to ensure they are totally destroyed.

He was accompanied by Dr. Stephen Njoka, Director of Desert Locust Control Organization for Eastern Africa, Meru County Chief Officer for Agriculture, Mrs. Dionisia M’Eruaki, Lewa Conservancy Chief Operations Officer Dr. Tuqa Jirmo and other Ministry and County Government officials from the affected counties.
