Governor Abdi has been impeached by 25 senators out of 31 at the senate. He becomes the third governor to be impeached by the senate.

The committee, headed by Nyamira Senator Okon’go Omogeni, found that the Governor Abdi had violated the Constitution by breaking the County Government Act, the Public Procurement Act and Asset Disposition Act, and the Public Finance Management Act.

On Monday evening, the Senate made a resolve to impeach the embattled governor.

Governor Abdi was impeached on Tuesday, April 27, after 37 MCAs voted in favour of his ouster, while 10 opposed his removal.

Financial impropriety, abuse of office, gross misconduct, and a breach of the Constitution were cited as reasons for his suspension by the MCAs.

They accused Governor Abdi of repeatedly reshuffling county officials, in violation of Articles 235 of the Constitution, the County Government Act, and the Public Service Act.

They also mocked the governor for allegedly breaking the Public Procurement Act and the Asset Disposition Act.

MCAs also cited poor service delivery by Governor Abdi’s administration.

Senators Vote

The Senate voted 28 senators in favor of a committee trial, 14 senators in favor of a plenary trial, and two senators abstained.

In the 11-member body, Okong’o Omogeni was deputized by Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika.

The committee met on Wednesday, May 12 and Thursday, May 13 before retiring for the weekend to write the draft.

On Monday, May 17, the report was presented in a special session.

The impeachment motion was tabled despite the existence of a court order that stopped the assembly from debating the ouster motion.

Governor Abdi’s deputy will now take over as the county governor.

Governor Abdi accused the county’s Senator Abdullahi Ali of orchestrating the ouster motion

According to Governor Abdi, the Senator declared interest in the seat adding that he was not surprised with the smear campaign aimed at him through the impeachment motion.
