MP Peter Salasya Arrested For Assault

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya was on Friday arrested over allegations of assaulting a local politician during a funeral held in Kakamega County.

Salsya, who faces charges of assault, causing physical harm and creating a disturbance in a way that could lead to a breach of peace, was however freed on a Ksh.50,000 bail following his apprehension.

The MP is set to be arraigned in court on Tuesday, January 16.

According to the police, the legislator was arrested in connection with the incident, during which two of his security personnel allegedly fired shots into the air.

A video documenting the Friday incident captures Salasya, dressed stylishly in a light grey suit, addressing mourners gathered at the event.

Minutes into his address, Salsaya’s attention shifts to an individual outside the camera’s field of view whom the legislator repeatedly implores to sit down so that he can continue with his address.

Despite Salasya’s instructions, the man, who sources indicate was an area MCA seeking to address the gathering,  fails to comply, prompting the MP to dramatically slap him in broad daylight.

Salaysa’s security detail and entourage then intervene, overpowering the man and escorting him from the podium.

Criticism From Kenyans

Many Kenyans on social media have criticized the MP following the emergence of a video capturing the legislator physically assaulting a man during a recent funeral he attended.

The video seen by ThisIsLaikipia captures Salasya, dressed stylishly in a light grey suit, addressing mourners gathered at the event.

Minutes into his address, Salsaya’s attention shifts to an individual outside the camera’s field of view whom the legislator repeatedly implores to sit down so that he can continue with his address.

Despite Salasya’s instructions, the man, who sources indicate was a local politician seeking to also address the gathering,  fails to comply, prompting the MP to dramatically slap him in broad daylight.

Salaysa’s security detail and entourage then intervene, overpowering the man and escorting him from the podium.

Kenyans took to social media to castigate Salasya with many criticizing the legislator for assaulting the said man.

“Is this what youthful leaders bring to the table?  Why would a man slap someone who is literally in his own world? Peter Salasya has let many of us down,” said @KuloConrad

“Former DCJ Nancy Baraza was discharged from duty for pinching someone’s nose. Mumias East MP Peter Salasya punched someone in public. Our laws are meant to protect certain individuals and punish other. This is WRONG bwana Salasya,” added @abuga-makori.
